Hello my darlings,

Seasonal living in summer refers to how we physically live our lives in rhythm with summer.

Some of us are more intuitive than others. This comes from spending more time allowing the modern world to go quiet and listening to our bodies and nature. The desire to live seasonally is inherent – beyond genetic code – it is the divine design for all life on this planet.

Seasonal Living & the Circadian Rhythm

There is a mechanism within us all called our circadian rhythm. I am obsessed with how integrative this concept is with every part of our health. Without going too into detail here, the circadian rhythm is the body’s internal 24 hour clock.

Time itself might be a construct, but how your body operates actually flows with the rising and setting of the sun, which will vary depending on the season.

So How Does Seasonal Living in Summer Work?

It’s the way we rise earlier because the sun rises earlier. How we are able to enjoy being outside longer because the sun is out longer. Seasonal living in summer is about eating seasonal fruits like berries and watermelon. It’s about playing in the water whenever you can to naturally cool off instead of wilting by the air conditioner. During the summer, seasonal living looks like early morning walks to take advantage of the early morning red light therapy (when the UV index is low but the biohacking, inflammation reducing rays are shining).

Essentially, seasonal living in summer is about celebrating the simple presence of the sun because this is the season of light. Our ancestors knew to celebrate the sun for the light and warmth that gives life to everything on this planet. Summer is a season with an abundance of light, opposite its twin – Winter. While Winter brings pleasures of its own (like rest and relaxation), summer is a time for activity and action, to be outside for as long as possible to enjoy the gift of sunlight.

seasonal living in summer Activities to Try:

  • Find a local You-Pick farm for fresh, clean produce you harvest yourself.
  • Try making homemade jams and jellies with your fruit
  • Make lots of sun colored foods and drinks, like fresh squeezed lemonade and homemade creamsicles.
  • Have a bonfire (if allowed) and make smores with homemade marshmallows
  • Make Moonwater with the Full Moon in June, the Strawberry Moon (get your ritual tools here)

The Two Components of Seasonal Living

However, there is a second component to seasonal living and that is the emotional aspect of each season. What we just discussed is the physical celebration of seasonal living, but both the physical and emotional attributes of each season are important to encompass for true seasonal living.  If you’re someone who practices the pagan way of life, then you’ll have a better understanding of this concept than others. Regardless of your background, I encourage you to stick with me here because I’m still going to give you some valuable tips to take away.

What If I Am Not Pagan?

For those of us that shy away from the word pagan, I would really like to reiterate that the term pagan simply means country folk. Religious leaders of the past feared the pagans for their lack of interest in organized religion and painted the pagan practices as darkness and evil. However, originally it just referred to the quaint country folk who stuck to their traditional practices even after they became ‘outdated’. So if you’re interested in creating a life that flows with the seasons, honor a slower, more traditional way of living, and find nature to be deeply spiritual – well you might be more “pagan” than you think.

Going Deeper with seasonal living in summer

It’s important to recognize summer is marked with the presence of sunshine, this is really what makes summer stand out from the other seasons. Summer Solstice marks the midway point in the year, when the presence of the sun is the longest of the whole year. So it is during the summer though we celebrate the abundance of light.

Now when we take in the emotional component of seasonal living in summer, what we’re really trying to do is create a metaphor around our lives in comparison to nature.

So think about the importance of the Sun and what it does for Earth, and what it does for humanity. Transform that into a metaphor that can help you grow and become better as a person, help you evolve into a higher version of yourself.

seasonal living in summer Journal Prompts

Creating journal prompts is my favorite way to go deeper. Design questions to help you in a variety of different areas that you might be struggling with in life – health, wealth, love, relationships, career, beauty, etc. The more we put our mind into making a direct change specifically throughout the season, the more likely we are to affect changes. I believe using the magic of the season can help you make these changes more efficiently.

How to Create a Journal Prompt

So just for example:

In the summer there is an abundance of light. How do you see an abundance in your life?

Summer is a season full of activity. Where do you wish you could be more active in your life and what are simple steps to help you become more active?

Take an attribute of summer and relate it to something in your life.

Safe Sun Worship

One last note from the esthetician in me before I go. I love to teach the practice of safe sun worship to my clients, to protect their skin and their health at the same time. This means:

  • Follow your circadian rhythm, expose your skin in the early months of spring and the early morning hours to build what is called a “sun callus”
  • Don’t wear sunglasses. They trick the receptors in your eyes and inhibit the proper production of melanin, which protects your skin from harmful UV rays
  • Eating seasonal fruit like raspberries, watermelon, and tomatoes on a regular basis can actually provide you with sun protection, internally. This is also true of pure coffee, chaga mushroom, and cacao.
  • Know your limits. Not every skin type can be exposed to the skin for the same amount of time. Listen to your body, if you feel like it’s been too much, get yourself into the shade.
  • Use physical barriers like zinc oxide sunscreen, clothing, and hats to protect your skin and avoid chemical sunscreens.
  • Avoid seed oils, these can actually make you more susceptible to burning in the sun.

We love the sun. To worship the sun means to love and respect the sun, not to fear it. The sun gives us life and so many blessings. Your body needs the sun to survive and thrive.

Wishing you a life full of enchantment!
